Why we started a book club

"It shouldn't have to happen to you to matter to you."

This is a sign we have hanging up in our home. On a consistent basis, we try to instill empathy and courage into our four young boys. We talk a lot about what equality looks like, feels like, and when it requires action because we believe allyship is a verb.

When we started The Curious Crow Company, we were concerned with starting a small business (at this time in history) and how to make a living and feed our family, but we also wanted to leave a legacy for our children that they would be proud of. We wanted (and continue to want) to be disrupters in how a game store is perceived and received. But we mostly wanted to offer a third space for community and fellowship, a safe space and gathering place for anyone and everyone to explore their curiousities with some structured activities and events to make it fun.

We have been slowly building our audience and regulars, and that has been the most rewarding aspect of our venture. Getting to know our patrons on a personal level, seeing them weekly and being a part of their lives, and participating in this form of community...well, it's why we did what we did. So when we feel like some of our flock is being threatened and attacked with the continual and chaotic current events and executive orders, we want to do something. We want to take action and not be silent. We want to stand up and say, "You're always welcome here, and we have your back," and really mean it.

That is why we started the Avalanche Book Club. Yes, we are reading banned books. Yes, it is our form of resistance. And...it is an effort to provide more opportunities for meaningful experiences where we can exchange ideas, discuss some topics, and find community and support during this time because, let's face it, it's rough out there. It is free to join, and there are virtual options for those who can not- or prefer not- to meet in person. This isn't a monetary thing for us. It is about living our values out loud and offering service in any way that we can. It is about taking a stand and standing in unity

Join us for our first meeting on March 18th at 6 PM. We will meet every 3rd Tuesday of the month thereafter. More information can be found on our Avalanche Book Club page.

P.S. Bonus points to you if you figure out what our book club name is in reference to! Comment with your theories, and we may send you a prize if you are correct.
